Description
In response to the
need of those with HIV/AIDS, Bering Omega Community Services created
many innovative programs. In 1986, when dying AIDS patients were being
discharged from local hospitals with no home to go to and no one to care
for them, Bering Omega opened a residential hospice program, known as
Omega House, the state s first such facility for persons in the final
stages of AIDS. In 1987, Bering Omega built the first Dental Clinic in
the U.S. specifically for persons with HIV. We responded to a need for
dental care as many dentists refused to treat previously healthy
patients who were suddenly developing never-seen-before lymphomas,
ulcers, and candida of the mouth.
When local emergency rooms were being used as drop-off sites for AIDS
patients who couldn t be left unattended during the day, Bering Omega
responded by opening the first Adult Day Care Center in Texas. Last
year, Bering Omega offered its services to more than 2,500 (or 1 in 3
persons known to be infected in Houston) indigent, uninsured and
under-served HIV+ individuals and their caregivers in the Greater
Houston area who have no other healthcare alternatives. Our mission is
to nurture the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of persons
with critical health needs through compassionate programs and
services.
