Hope House, Inc.
Hope House first opened its doors in
1983 in a four-bedroom house in Independence, Missouri, more than
twenty-four years ago. Today, the agency is comprised of two innovative
facilities in Independence and Lee s Summit, accommodating up to 104
women and children a night, making it Missouri?s largest domestic
violence shelter. In 2006, Hope House sheltered 770 women and 556
children and provided outreach services for more than 9,000 additional
clients. According to the University of Missouri?Columbia Law School
Domestic Violence Project, the number of domestic violence incidents and
assaults reported in Jackson County alone (the location of Hope House?s
shelters) have remained steady in recent years, with 7,236 incidents and
1,006 assaults being reported in 2005. Hope House provides service to
women and children from the greater Kansas City metropolitan area. The
women and children served by Hope House in 2006 were from all ages,
races, religions and socio-economic statuses; however, they were
predominantly Caucasian (53.9%) and African American (33.2%). The
average annual income of these women was $6,689 and 78.9% of them earned
